Cape Race, Newfoundland

VO1MCE

This station went on the air on Nov. 17th, 1904 and went off in 1967. It  was the first point of contact with the "new world", coming westward, and the last point of contact going back eastward.  Mr Marconi visited Cape Race in 1902, and from 02 to 04, visited the Cape many times and actually stayed with My Grandparents.   In 2001, The Cape Race Heritage Society secured funds to replicate the 1904 station and I formed The Irish Loop Amateur Radio Club, and was successful in acquiring space in the Museum for our Club Station. From 1904 until 1913, the station call was MCE.  Following the  Titanic Disaster,  during which Cape Race, by the way, handled the distress and  most of the traffic from other ships involved.  The call then became VCE which was in use until 1967. In 2003 the Museum was named The Myrick Wireless Interpretation Centre in memory of my family who from 1872 until the present day were Lighthouse Keepers, Telegraphers, and from 1904  onward, Wireless Operators.
