In 1906, Marconi used this station for the first reliable transmission and reception of commercial transoceanic messages. It was primarily used as a receiving station at that time and worked in conjunction with it's remote transmitting station located in the New Brunswick NJ area. By 1914, this site was used as a branch of the Marconi Wireless Company of America. It was known at that time as the Belmar Station, and on this site the Marconi Company built a development laboratory, dormitories, two resident houses and other facilities. Later in 1919, the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) was formed and took control of all American Marconi property. The Marconi Wireless Company of America ceased to exist and in 1924, RCA abandoned the site. In 1941, the Marconi site was sold to the US Army Signal Corp and in 1999, the site was turned over to the township of Wall , NJ. The Marconi buildings are being preserved and plans call for a park with walking and nature trails, a college campus, recreation center and a museum. |
